|NAGASAKI PEACE ACTIVIST DIES AT 92|
A peace activist who survived the U.S. atomic bombing of Nagasaki has died at the age of 92.
Hideo Tsuchiyama died at a hospital on Saturday morning.
He was a student at the Nagasaki Medical College when the bomb was dropped on August 9th, 1945. He had been evacuated to a neighboring prefecture, but immediately returned to Nagasaki to treat patients at the college hospital, located about 500 meters from ground zero.
Tsuchiyama later became a pathologist and served as president of Nagasaki University, as well as dean of the medical department. He started a civic movement in the city, calling for the abolition of nuclear weapons. He also served on a committee that drafted the annual Nagasaki Peace Declaration for more than two decades.
