|NEW DETERRENCE STRATEGY|
The U.S. government has announced a new nuclear strategy to enhance its deterrence capabilities. This marks a policy shift from former President Barack Obama, who often advocated for a world without nuclear weapons.
The administration of President Donald Trump released on Friday the Nuclear Posture Review. The new policy sees global threats rapidly growing as Russia and China expand their nuclear arsenals, and North Korea continues its nuclear development. The document states that enhancing the U.S. nuclear deterrence is needed to counter such threats.
It calls for modernizing U.S. nuclear arsenals and deploying submarine-launched ballistic missiles armed with low-yield nuclear warheads.
Under the new policy, the U.S. would only consider the use of nuclear weapons in "extreme circumstances." But the government isn't ruling out the possibility of using nuclear weapons in response to a conventional attack.
