PROMOTING REGIONAL JAPAN
NYで日本観光の魅力アピール
Visitors to a major travel show in New York are encountering ninja, bonsai, and regional Japanese attractions.
A major Japanese travel agency and regional officials set up booths to promote tourism outside the big cities.
The prefecture of Mie showed off the secretive arts of traditional ninja. Saitama City demonstrated the skills behind bonsai, a thriving industry.
The booth from Gifu Prefecture offers a tourist route covering places related to the late Japanese diplomat Chiune Sugihara. Known as "Japan's Schindler," he issued visas to thousands of Jews during World War II to help them escape the Nazi Holocaust.
The show is sponsored by a major U.S. newspaper and features booths from about 170 countries.
