A Japanese aquarium says it has filmed a juvenile coelacanth in waters off Indonesia. The coelacanth is a living fish fossil that has undergone little change since prehistoric times.
Aquamarine Fukushima says its research team captured the footage161 meters deep in Manado Bay off North Sulawesi Province.
The team was conducting research using a remote control underwater camera when they made the discovery on October 6th. The fish is 31.5 centimeters long and appears to be a newborn. A 30-centimeter coelacanth was found dead inside its mother in Mozambique in 1991.
The aquarium has been studying the fish since opening nine years ago. It says it is the first time that a live juvenile coelacanth has been found since the species was discovered in 1938.
