ISLAND CROPS THREATENED BY DEER
伊豆大島で野生の"キョン"増加
Farmers on one of Japan's islands are outnumbered by thousands of deer that are targeting their crops, and authorities are stepping up efforts to contain the problem.
The small variety of deer, called Reeve's muntjac, is common in southeastern China. It's designated an invasive alien species in Japan. Its population has exploded on the island of Izu Oshima, over 100 kilometers south of central Tokyo and administered by the capital.
The problem dates back to 1970, when a typhoon hit an animal park, allowing over a dozen of the deer to escape. The population is believed to be around 13,000. By contrast, about 8,000 humans live on the island. Farmers say the deer eat their specialty crops — ashitaba and camellia.
